Week 15: Podcasts in the Classroom

Podcasts are easily one of my favorite obsessions from quarantine! I caught myself constantly playing podcasts in the background while I worked from home. My plc and I randomly stumbled upon the Mars Patel podcast series last year and our students were HOOKED. I have never had so many student begging for more! They're quite long, and ended up taking longer than we expected so we had to cut the unit a bit short. Students were so excited to listen to these podcast episodes at their own pace, and follow along tot the story.

This week, in Ashley's blog, she describes the many benefits of using podcasts in the classroom. Here are a few:

-Student engagement

-Listening skills

-Student independence

-Reflective thinking

I noticed every single one of these when we let our students listen to the Mars Patel podcast. I love that you can use podcasts for whole class listening or independent work. They'd also be great for enrichment! Since my school is still hybrid, some of our virtual students feel like they run out of things to do. Podcasts would be a perfect way for them to pace themselves, while also having some sort of enrichment!

Here are some other examples of kid friendly podcasts:

-Six Minutes

-But Why

-Tumble Science Podcasts for Kids

-Brains On! Science Podcast for Kids

-Stories Podcast

  1. This sounds so fun, I love podcasts but I've never really thought about sharing them with students for a little extra enrichment. Next year I'm working with slightly older students and I'll definitely keep this in mind! Did you just have discussions with your students after listening to podcasts or did you have reflective assignments that aligned with the podcasts you used?

    1. Both! Definitely check out TPT and Youtube. They has some great resources for using podcasts as enrichment.

Our 4th grade teacher does this with her students. They are hooked and ask to listen again and again. I will have to investigate the examples you have given. My concern has been that they are not appropriate for the younger students.
