Week 14: Hybrid Debate

This year has been very challenging in terms of collaboration amongst students. We began our argument unit about a month ago, and have been itching to incorporate some sort of group work with an opinion based article. This week, we decided to take advantage of our new hybrid learning model and get students collaborating! (From a distance of course)

We utilized one of my all time favorite platforms, Google Slides. We gave students an article about how emojis have completely changed the English language and how we communicate with one another. This is a topic we knew they would be excited to explore. Once they finished reading and annotating the article, we had them collaborate on a shared Google Slides presentation to find Ethos, Logos and Pathos. Then, they had to determine the authors claim all while collaborating with a partner! Since we are hybrid, this lesson worked perfectly for our in person AND virtual students. The virtual students truly felt a part of class and the in person students were able to work with someone new. It was a wonderful experience and I will definitely be utilizing slides again for collaborative work!

  1. Jessica,
This sounds like such a great way to engage your students! I really like using Google slides for collaboration in my classes as well (mostly because you can see when students are writing on their designated slide and you can use that to help guide groups too). I like how you chose an article that you knew would be engaging for your students as well, and I think that this is a great culturally responsive technique. We just transitioned to hybrid learning (I had been using Google slides for collaboration with fully distance learning), so I am happy to hear that this resource works great for hybrid learning too!

  2. Jessica,
This sounds very engaging for your students! From your post, it sounds like students were really engaged and enjoyed the lesson. We have been in person the entire year, but I have heard from several people in hybrid models about the challenges they face. It sounds like this lesson was a learning success for in person AND hybrid! While I do not think it would apply to my kindergarteners, I like to read about tools being utilized regardless! Thanks for sharing!

  3. I really like the way you blended the hybrid and in person students for this activity! We also do annotations in googles slides and it works really well.
