Week 13: Student Choice

This week, in Ashley's blog, she discusses the importance of student choice. This is something my plc and I are proud to implement once we return in person next week. "Using student choice menus in your classroom is such a great way to foster student choice independence. It also helps you not have to constantly reinvent the wheel on weekly activities for stations, centers, or different activities." Not having to constantly reinvent the wheel is such a relieve. Especially this year, when it seems teachers have had to reinvent more than just curriculum. I love that Ashley mentions how by giving student choice in their work, you create buy in.

Here are some of Ashley's examples for digital learning:

-Google Classroom activities

-Podcast episodes

-Epic

-External websites

-Seesaw assignments

-Articles or current events to read

This year, we have created many choice boards for students. They have ranged from Covid writing prompts to article choice analysis. The kids love being able to pick how they show understanding of a new topic. They can be tricky to create once, but after you create the first one, they are very easy to implement!

  1. Jessica, I agree that allowing student choice is so important and can lead to greater levels of student engagement and motivation. Choice board are a great way to promote this online. I have not created one yet, but our district math coaches did share one for math centers and I love the idea. I will have to try to make one for a different content. Thanks! – Alison Smith
