This week, Ashley discusses the importance of goal setting for students. This is something my plc and I were just talking about incorporating once we return to in person classes. I love that Ashley talks about goal setting as a reset, or a fresh start. This is exactly the mindset we want students to have when they walk through our doors on April 5th. "It’s a fresh start with new beginnings and a chance to better ourselves towards the person we want to become. Goal setting is such an an important skill that we must teach our students. Everyone has room to grow and become better!"
Ashly provides two tips for creating effective goal setting. She recommends taking time to reflect. Normally, we would conference with students and have them reflect on their growth with MAP testing. Unfortunately, we have not been able to take the MAP test this year, so we have decided to analyze students writing throughout the year. Then, we will conference with them on best ways to prepare for KREP in May.
Ashley's second tip is to be intentional with goal setting. Encourage students to focus on just one goal, instead of many small ones. For example, if we were using MAP data, maybe aim to improve your MAP score by five points in the Spring! Encouraging students to assess their own learning and achieve their goals can help them become accountable for their own learning. Conferencing and goal setting will look a little different with CDC restrictions, but I"m beyond excited to see my students learn and grow!
These are great tips. Reflection is a skill to be taught. Most students respond, which is not reflection. I had not thought about MAP assessments. These students....
