The resources provided this week definitely helped me consider how my school can improve upon our own digital citizenship. Last year, TikTok was becoming quite popular and it was becoming an issue with cyberbullying and respect for others. Our school day was built around students obsessing over filming TikToks during class. It felt like a constant battle between teachers and students to ensure that they were engaged and successful in your class. The resources from this week helped me see that my school could benefit from some digital etiquette and responsibilities lessons. For example, we could have a special guest come speak to each grade level to explain to our students just how important their actions online are and the long lasting effects they could have.
Technology is such a powerful tool, if used in the correct way. The resources this week opened my eyes to the lack of respect many students have gained over the years with technology. They no longer see it as a privilege, but as a right. I loved reviewing the Google Digital Safety and Citizenship Curriculum. This would be quite easy to implement at the beginning of the school year and review in the middle of the year for students. The importance of digital citizenship should be stressed at all grade levels.
My daughter is on TikTok all the time. I hope you found some useful resources. I like Common Sense because it is aligned with standards.
