Celebrating Black History month is something I am beyond passionate about. My students know that I do not believe in limiting black history to just one month, and we should be celebrating and learning all year long. This year, I was trying to think of a fun way to engage students while being virtual. While reading Ashley's blog, she talked about the importance of giving students choice and how easy it is to incorporate virtually. "When students are able to choose which activity to work on when they are more engaged in their learning and are more likely to take ownership of their work." Students feel empowered by the ability to have choice in their education!
In giving my students choice, I chose eight different informational texts about influenction African American men and women. This year, I put all of the options on Ashley's choice board, and let students read through them all before making a choice. This was a great visual for students that came to class or may have missed out. They were so excited to see all of the visuals. I placed images on the board of people such as: Simone Biles, Kobe Bryant, Alice Coachman and Mae Jemison. This was such a fun way to get students excited about influential African American men and women while also giving them choice.
They were also given the option of working in breakout groups to collaborate and share their new knowledge of the ir chosen person. They all collaborated on Google Slides, and presented their findings to the class digitally. This lesson was 100% virtual and students were completely engaged. I highly recommend using a digital choice board for your Black History Month lessons!

I love your station choice menu that you posted on your iPad! That's such a good idea and such a wonderful way to allow your students to preview the choices they have before they start! :) - Ashley Dockery
ReplyDeleteGilkey, this sounds awesome! My school is pushing for more opportunities to incorporate black history into our lessons and I am in charge of our team's advisory lessons. This is definitely something that I could use in my classes next week to allow for student choice while still giving students some direction on their projects. Love it! -Jackie Pi
ReplyDeleteThis is such a creative and engaging ways to grasp students attention! It sounds like students enjoyed the learning process which will allow for deeper levels of comprehension in the long run! For my kindergarten class, I think I could follow something similar with a choice board for our read alouds! I then could have students record themselves retelling the story and working on sharing story elements. I always appreciate when a resource can be easily adapted for various grade levels! Thanks for sharing!
