Week 6: Digital Peer Review

This week, I was desperate to create a new way for my students to peer review their classmates informational writing pieces. I wasn't really sure where to begin. My students composed informational writing pieces about a family favorite recipe. Normally, I would have students swap work and peer review. However, we are still virtual and will be for at least another month. Therefore, I had to get a little creative!

I had students get into breakout groups based on their recipe. I tried to put a student who did a dessert with a student who did a breakfast meal. This way, they could see a recipe totally different from their own. The main purpose of this project was to teach students about the importance of our own culturally identities while also making us aware of the amazing cultures within our classroom. Last year, it was much easier for students to share their work with classmates and receive feedback.

My first thought was to utilize Google Forms and create a peer review form. I have attached a copy HERE for you to see. Then, I shared our class Google Drive folder of all the recipes. Students were able to see every recipe within our class, but had view only rights and no editing rights. This way, it eliminates the fear of a student accidentally deleting a classmates work.

Then, during our live Google Meet, I put students into breakout groups. They each peer reviewed two classmates recipes and filled in the Google Form as they read. This was a great opportunity for them to collaborate while being virtual.

  1. They may seem a little dated, but wikis are great for writing assignments. You can create an entire classroom set, pbworks.com, and students can edit or comment on peer work. Deletions can be reversed.
