Week 5: Fostering a love for reading with NTI

As a middle school English teacher, one of the best parts about being in the classroom is the first ten minutes of class each day. As a class, we read our selected IR novel and it's pure magic. This is truly the only ten minutes out of each day that students know they can enter my quiet room, listen to relaxing music and read any book they would like from my shelf. However, with NTI, it has truly been a challenge to get students excited about reading. This week, my chosen blogger, Ashley mentions a few tips for getting students to fall in love with reading. She recommends sending students the "Is it a good PICK?" bookmark! I have attached a copy below incase you would like a copy for your students!

She also recommends giving students reading partners while virtual. Try pairing students who love to read, with those that do not. I know this can be a challenge for those of us that have been online all year, so I would maybe send out a poll to get a feel for who does and does not enjoy reading. Ashley then recommends using digital notebooks to help students track their reading responses. I have been using Slide Carnival to create my digital notebooks and my students have been loving it! I would also ask your school librarian if they have a digital library for students so they can access books they are interested in online!

  1. I love that you have time set aside for your students to come into class and read. I am sure that helps some student regulate and get ready for the lesson ahead. Also I have seen the PICK acronym before, but love the idea of making it a book mark for students. We have a month material pick-up because I am still teaching remote, I could easily include this tool for my students. I am curious is Slide Carnival an app associated with Google or Microsoft? Or is it an independent tool? Thanks for sharing!

    1. Slide Carnival is actually a website that has a TON of Google Slides templates. They are all free! I've used their digital notebook and the Jeopardy slides! They're awesome and get added right to your Google Drive.

  2. I too love that you set aside time for your students to read books of their choice. So much of what my son's are reading for school is required. In order for kids to find a love for reading choice is so important. When students are interested in the topic they are much more likley to find the love of reading in themselves. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I agree that with NTI, getting students excited and engaged with independent reading has been incredibly difficult. We have even had extreme difficulty with students reading our class novel. As you stated, independent reading in the classroom is one of the best parts of the class, so it's sad to see a lack of engagement with reading virtually. I am definitely considering the reading partner idea for our next class text, though! Thank you for sharing!
