It has truly been a struggle to get students excited to read during distance learning. Many of my students expressed that they were reading at home, but wanted a way to share it with others. I know how much my students love Netflix and probably spend a majority of NTI with it on nonstop. Therefore, I created Bookflix! I wanted to see students collaborating with others while sharing what they've been reading during distance learning. So far, my students have loved combining their love for Netflix with excitement for reading. I also follow Teach Create Motivate on social media, and she shared the idea of letting students collaborate at the same time via Google Slides. I will warn you though, this can get messy because every students can edit the slides. Therefore, if somebody wanted to delete a classmates work, they could. I have been fortunate to not have to deal with that quite yet. However, I make sure students know that I can see every time a student edits the slides through the edit history.
Another thing to keep in mind is to make your slides uneditable. Anytime I do an activity like this, I always screenshot the slide, and reupload it as a background. Therefore, the students can still see what I want them to do, and have a template, but they can not edit it or change the directions. This eliminates the "my slides don't say that!" or "my slides don't have any of that!" Students learn pretty quickly that they can no longer use those excuses!

What a wonderful instructional idea! Love it. In the future, refrain from centering text. It creates eye strain in large bodies of text. Generally, it is used for short texts like headers, titles.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea! I love this -- what a great way to use something the students know and love and tweak it to incorporate books they enjoy. What a great way to help them connect their love for on-screen stories with off-screen (paperback) stories. I'm totally stealing this idea. And Google Slides is a totally do-able platform to create it with. Very nice.
